I am planning on backing up the blog when I get a free minute. I saw some websites that can be used to do this and plan to do it then transfer everything to Twitter. It would be heartbreaking to lose all the works we all contributed over the years.
Anyone have any suggestions of sites to back up tumblr blogs?
I had this idea, and I want to give it a go. I follow a ton of utterly fantastic and talented writers of all kinds here on Tumblr. I’m going to tag several (certainly not all that I know) and ask you to share one (or more) piece(s) of writing advice that you feel very strongly about and ask that you tag other writers in return. That way we can build up a thread of writing advice.
I’ll start with something I heard from my favourite screenwriting podcast tonight that I’m 100% behind:
Learn to write anywhere. Don’t let yourself form up so many habits so that you limit your writing.
If you’re not tagged and write, feel free to reblog anyway and add to it 😀
The one I feel most strongly about:
Don’t force yourself to write if you feel like you just can’t. It’s good to want to write as often as possible and to want to get something finished, but sometimes the words just won’t come to you no matter how badly you want them to.
So don’t force it. The words you force together will never be as good to you, or to your readers, as those that flowed without you fighting them. Allow yourself that break from time to time. Stop glaring at the screen. Go make yourself a coffee or something and come back to it when you’re ready. You’ll be better for it and so too will your writing.
If you’re a perfectionist like I can be sometimes, write tired (or tipsy, that also works). I mean, I can spend ages agonising over a single line and progress at a speed of one sentence per half hour and then I get frustrated. When I’m tired, it’s like my filter is lifted and I just write whatever comes to mind and then I can go back and edit it later. Some of my favourite things I’ve written have been in the dead of night, severely jet lagged or in the midst of a sporting competition. Not, you know, that I’m advocating giving yourself insomnia 😛
I think you’re all writers? If I’m wrong feel free to ignore me 😛
Never feel like your writing isn’t good.. there’s always going to be typos, and grammatical errors.. there’s never going to be a time where someone isn’t hateful.. and there will always be people who have more followers, or likes, or kudos, etc.. but the important thing to remember is that; you are the only one who can write like you. You have your own unique way of writing, and no one can take that away.
Hmm. I think one of the most valuable tips was given to me by @belovedunderwing . She said if you are having trouble with a scene or chapter, to flip it and write it from the other character’s point of view. Sometimes that just works better. Or it may loosen things up.
I also listen to music. The concept of my story came from one song. And sometimes I will change up the music to try and get inspiration or get in the mood to write.
Last, try to have at least one friend who is willing to Beta, not so much for grammar or punctuation as for continuity and anything that is off in the chapter. @star-horse has saved me a couple of times now! I know how it’s coming across in my head, but to have an objective opinion tell you how your story or chapter made them feel is invaluable.
Thank you for tagging me @pandoraspocksao3 I think the biggest piece of advice I can give is that somewhere along the way, you will run into those that hate your writing-and they will be quite vocal about it. Although their words will cut you to the bone, keep writing. Write for yourself and write for those that enjoy your writing.
A lion doesn’t concern itself with the opinion of sheep.
My best piece of advice is that it’s okay for writing to just be a hobby. There are so many elitist assholes on this site who will tear you down in the name of “helping you become a better writer.”
These people don’t care about your writing, they just want to make themselves feel better because their real lives are empty. It’s okay to write for fun, as an outlet for everyday stressors. If writing is causing you more stress when it’s supposed to be an outlet then it is doing you no good. Enjoy writing and ignore those who tear you down with the front of being helpful.
